      Minutes for Regular Board Meeting of Jan. 14, 2014

Present: Supervisors, Tina McKeever, Roger McKeever, Deb Johnson; Clerk, Doug Schwecke; Treasurer, Alicia Kangas; Fire Chief, Phil Bonin; Asst. Clerk Gale Ring, Commissioner Bruce Martinson, and residents of Schroeder.

The meeting was called to order by T. McKeever at 7:00PM.

  1. McKeever moved to approve the minutes of Dec. 10, 2013. D. Johnson seconded. Minutes approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Receipts for Dec. totaled $3,377.77. Disbursements totaled $5,070.73. The ending checkbook balance as of Jan. 1 was $36,570.35. R. McKeever moved to approve the treasurer’s report. D. Johnson seconded. Treasurer’s Report was approved. A cash flow projection based on prior years was looked at. R. McKeever moved to approve Treasurer Kangas to move $10,000 from checking into a CD. D. Johnson seconded, Motion was approved.

  1. McKeever moved to approve checks #3186-3208 in the amount of $8,688.01. D. Johnson seconded. Motion passed.

Lodging tax debit slip for $760.45 was approved and signed.

Commissioner Martinson: Bruce reported that the 1% sales tax collected in 2013 was up by about 9.5% over 2012. The levy for the county will show 0% increase, with about a .9% increase over the last 4 years. North Shore Collaborative Group is working to establish conifers in the dying birch stands along the North Shore. This year’s efforts will be in the Cascade River area.

SAHS-Linda Lamb reported exhibits for this year include ones by Godfrey Dahl and a traveling exhibit from St. Louis Co. by Eastman Johnson, entitled “Ojibwe Faces and Stories”. Game night will resume on Monday evenings at 6:30 in Jan. Also looking for part-time help for gift shop.

Fire and Rescue: Phil reported that at their meeting last night they reviewed the use of the new radios, checked the trucks over, and prepared for chimney fire season. 1 fire call and several accident calls last month.

Road and Bridge: Bill reported that the piles of snow at intersections have been pushed back. The snow on the parking lot, especially in front of Fire Hall will need to be pushed back also. Deb has received several calls about plowing on Tote Rd.

Cemetery: Nothing new.

Recreation: Nothing new.

Maintenance: A problem with the urinals is being checked out. Options for table storage were discussed. R. McKeever moved to purchase 2 upright table storage carts. D. Johnson seconded. Motion passed.

Other Business: Skip Lamb reported that Birch Grove Buddies, a before and after school daycare program is up and running. Also the lease between BGCS and BG Foundation has been settled. Skip also presented his trucking report showing 86 truck trips to his composting facility on Cramer Rd. He also requested that the Township request the County to upgrade Cramer Rd. to a 10 ton road to serve the industrial businesses on Cramer Rd. T. McKeever moved to have the clerk send a written request to the Cook County Commissioners and Highway Dept. to consider upgrading Cramer Rd. to a paved 10 ton road. R. McKeever seconded. Motion passed. There will be a meeting tomorrow morning at 10:30 to consider changes to Caribou Wayside Rest Area. R. McKeever moved to oppose the transportation resolution proposed by MAT. D. Johnson seconded. Motion passed. R. McKeever moved to approve the following as election judges and absentee ballot judges; LaVonne Anderson, Jan Dillon, Judy Gregg, Carol Tveekrem, Gale Ring, and Alicia Kangas. T. McKeever seconded. Motion passed. The 2014 meeting schedule was approved, with the Board of Audit to be held after the regular Feb. meeting. The budget will also be set next month. Carol Tveekrem spoke on behalf of residents on Baraga Cross Rd. stating that while they appreciate the work done on the park, they would oppose any other improvements. She also mentioned Township contact information needs to be updated on the Cook County website. Former township clerk Marion Calph passed away about 3 weeks ago.
